Tonsillitis is an inflammatory condition of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped lymphoid tissues located at the back of the throat. In this condition, the tonsils become swollen, red, and tender, often leading to considerable discomfort. One of the most common symptoms is a sore throat, accompanied by pain or difficulty while swallowing. The throat may feel dry and scratchy, and the voice can become hoarse or muffled.
Tonsillitis can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, with streptococcal bacteria being one of the most common culprits. Along with throat pain, individuals may experience fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, bad breath, and general fatigue. In some cases, white or yellow patches or pus may be visible on the surface of the tonsils, indicating a more severe infection.
The condition is especially common in children but can affect people of all ages. It spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or close contact with an infected person.
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity. Mild cases may improve with rest, warm fluids, saltwater gargles, and over-the-counter pain relievers. In bacterial cases, antibiotics may be prescribed. Chronic or recurring tonsillitis may require surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy).
Maintaining good hygiene, staying hydrated, and boosting the immune system through a healthy diet can help prevent and manage tonsillitis effectively.
