Cough and cold are among the most common respiratory ailments that affect people of all age groups, especially during seasonal changes or exposure to cold weather. These conditions are usually caused by viral infections, though bacterial infections, allergens, and environmental factors like pollution or sudden temperature changes can also play a role.
The symptoms typically begin with a sore throat, followed by a persistent cough, runny or blocked nose, sneezing, and a feeling of general discomfort or fatigue. As the infection progresses, individuals may experience body aches, headaches, mild fever, and difficulty sleeping due to nasal congestion and throat irritation. The cough may be dry or accompanied by mucus, depending on the severity and nature of the infection.
Cough and cold are usually self-limiting and resolve within a few days to a week. However, they can cause significant discomfort, disrupt daily routines, and lower energy levels. In some cases, if left untreated or if immunity is weak, they may lead to complications such as bronchitis, sinusitis, or chest infections.
Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and boosting the immune system. This includes rest, increased fluid intake, warm soups or teas, steam inhalation, throat lozenges, and over-the-counter medications such as decongestants or cough syrups. Traditional and Unani remedies often involve herbal preparations, honey, tulsi (holy basil), ginger, and black pepper to soothe the throat and ease congestion.
Preventive measures such as maintaining personal hygiene, avoiding cold exposure, and strengthening immunity through a balanced diet and natural supplements are essential to reduce the frequency and severity of cough and cold episodes.
