Constipation is a common digestive issue characterized by infrequent bowel movements, often accompanied by the passage of hard, dry stools and difficulty in passing stool, especially in the morning. It may also cause a feeling of incomplete evacuation, abdominal discomfort, bloating, and loss of appetite.
This condition can result from poor dietary habits, such as a low intake of fiber, insufficient water consumption, or a sedentary lifestyle. Other contributing factors include ignoring the natural urge to pass stool, irregular sleep patterns, stress, and the use of certain medications. In some cases, underlying health conditions like hypothyroidism or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may also be responsible.
Chronic constipation can lead to complications such as piles (hemorrhoids), anal fissures, or a general sense of heaviness and fatigue. It is important to address constipation early by increasing fiber intake through fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity.
Natural remedies such as warm water with lemon, soaked raisins, or herbal teas may help stimulate digestion and bowel movement. In traditional systems like Unani and Ayurveda, specific herbs and formulations are used to gently cleanse the bowels and restore digestive balance.
