Indigestion is a common digestive complaint that refers to discomfort or a feeling of heaviness in the stomach, particularly after eating. It is often accompanied by symptoms such as bloating, nausea, flatulence (gas), lack of appetite, burping, and in some cases, vomiting. Individuals experiencing indigestion may also report a burning sensation in the upper abdomen or chest, often confused with heartburn.
This condition is generally caused by irregular dietary habits, such as eating too quickly, overeating, or consuming excessively spicy, oily, or rich foods that are difficult to digest. Skipping meals, eating at irregular hours, and lying down immediately after eating can also contribute to poor digestion. Other contributing factors include stress, lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and the frequent use of certain medications that irritate the stomach lining.
Indigestion is not a disease on its own but a symptom of various underlying digestive issues, including gastritis, acid reflux, peptic ulcers, or even anxiety-related digestive disturbances.
To manage indigestion, it is important to adopt a balanced and regular diet, avoid overeating, and limit the intake of spicy and greasy foods. Mild physical activity after meals, adequate hydration, and stress reduction techniques can also support healthy digestion. Traditional remedies, such as herbal teas (like mint or ginger), fennel seeds, or warm water with lemon, are often used to ease discomfort and promote digestive balance.
If indigestion becomes frequent or severe, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying gastrointestinal conditions.
