Toothache, known as Dard Dandan in traditional medicine, is a common and often distressing condition that can vary in intensity from mild discomfort to excruciating pain. It typically occurs due to dental problems such as tooth decay, cavities, gum infections, or abscess formation. In many cases, the gums surrounding the affected tooth become swollen, tender, and reddish, signaling inflammation or infection.
The pain may be sharp, throbbing, or constant, and may worsen when chewing food, drinking hot or cold beverages, or lying down. In severe cases, the discomfort can radiate to the jaw, ear, or head, making it difficult for the patient to focus or sleep. Sometimes, the pain becomes so intense that it leads to restlessness and irritability, especially in children or those with sensitive nerves.
Contributing factors include poor oral hygiene, consumption of excessive sugary foods, cracked or broken teeth, or untreated dental conditions. If not managed promptly, toothache can lead to complications such as gum abscesses, tooth loss, or spread of infection to other parts of the body.
Timely dental care, proper oral hygiene, and natural or traditional remedies can help manage the pain and address the underlying cause. In Unani and other traditional systems, herbal applications and cooling agents are often used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
